Yesterday Intivation has, in cooperation with one of its shareholders DOEN Participations and client Digicel, donated one thousand solar powered mobile phones to the Dutch Cooperating Aid Organisations and Haiti's largest micro-finance institution in Port au Prince.

Good communication is an absolute necessity in disaster relief but Haiti currently has a tremendous power problem, which impedes charging mobile phones. The mobile network itself still functions in many instances due to backup generators, or it can be repaired much quicker than the electricity grid.

Intivation is a Dutch company that has invented a technology to enable mobile phones that can be charged exclusively on solar power. Mobile phones that use this technology have been deployed worldwide since 2009, predominantly in regions that do not have reliable electricity girds. Over half a million of these devices have been sold worldwide in the last six months.

DOEN foundation, financed by the Dutch Postcode Lottery, has participated at the urging of Intivation shareholder DOEN Participations; normally the foundation does not focus on disaster relief. DOEN foundation has been a longstanding investor in Haiti, among its participations is Sèvis Finansye Fonkoze (SFF), the country's largest micro finance institution. This organisation helps mostly women in Haiti with small loans so they can start businesses, and it has 37 branches that can be called on for the distribution of the solar phones.

Digicel is the largest mobile network operator in the Caribbean. Digicel has lost employees and their family members in the current disaster. The company has begun an extensive aid program, in which two private planes are being used for the relief effort to transport goods, and also the solar phones, to the Port au Prince area. Once a landing slot has been granted Digicel will ensure that the solar handsets will be delivered to SFF and Cordaid, which is coordinating the effort on behalf of the Cooperating Dutch Aid Organisations.

DUTCH Gisteren heeft het Amsterdamse bedrijf Intivation, in samenwerking met een van haar aandeelhouders DOEN Participaties en haar klant Digicel, een mobiele operator op Haiti, 1000 mobiele telefoons op zonne-energie geschonken aan de Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties en de grootste microfinancieringsorganisatie van Haiti in Porte au Prince.

Goede communicatie is absolute noodzaak bij rampenbestrijding, doch Haiti heeft momenteel een groot gebrek aan stroom, en het opladen van mobiele telefoons kan dus ook niet. GSM-masten en het netwerk zelf daarentegen werken vaak wel vanwege back-up stroomaggregaten, of zijn veel sneller weer in de lucht dan dat een electriciteitsnetwerk gerepareerd kan worden.

Intivation is een Nederland bedrijf dat een technologie uitgevonden heeft waardoor mobiele telefoons enkel op zonne-energie kunnen werken. Sinds 2009 worden deze telefoons wereldwijd verkocht, met name in gebieden zonder electriciteit zoals in Afrika en Latijns Amerika, waaronder Haiti. Er zijn al meer dan een half miljoen van deze telefoons in amper 6 maanden verkocht wereldwijd. 

Stichting DOEN, gefinancierd door de Nationale Postcode Loterij, heeft op aanraden van Intivation's aandeelhouder DOEN Participaties een uitzondering in de ondersteuning voor deze ramp; normaliter houdt Stichting DOEN zich nl. niet met rampenbestrijding bezig. Stichting DOEN investeert al jaren op Haiti, waaronder in de grootste microfinancieringsorganisatie van het land: Sèvis Finansye Fonkoze (SFF). Deze organisatie helpt m.n. vrouwen op Haiti om met kleine leningen ondernemer te worden, en heeft 37 branches die nu (deels) ingezet kunnen worden ter verspreiding van de Intivation zonnetelefoons. 

Digicel is  de grootste mobiele operator in het Caribisch gebied. Digicel werknemers, en familieleden daarvan, zijn ook omgekomen. Digicel heeft een groot hulpprogramma opgezet, waarbij twee prive vliegtuigen ingezet worden om goederen, waaronder de Intivation zonne-telefoons in Port au Prince te krijgen. Het wachten is momenteel op een landingslot voor deze vliegtuigen. Digicel zorgt er vervolgens voor dat de Intivation telefoons zo spoedig mogelijk geleverd worden aan Sèvis Finansye Fonkoze (SFF) en Cordaid. Cordaid regelt ter plaatse de coordinatie namens de Nederlandse Samenwerkende Hulporganisaties.
