The new WakaWaka Power provides 16 hours of safe and decent reading light on less than a day of sunlight. Ruggedized, water resistant, it can withstand extreme environments. All thanks to our state-of-the-art solar technology
WakaWaka Power usea super bright high power LED`s from one of the top 4 semiconductor companies, Seoul Semiconductors. WakaWaka only uses 0.5W and generates 60 lumen with it. With this we supersede the requirements of the United Nations for solar lamps with more than 50%.
WakaWaka has 4 light modes:
- 200% brightness (40 lumen) super bright torch mode
- 100% brightness (20 lumen) bright ambient light
- 50% brightness (10 lumen) bright reading light
- 10% brightness (2 lumen) soft night safety light
- SOS emergency beacon
WakaWaka has a 800 mAh NiMh battery (3 x AA size) with 500 cycles. This means it can be fully charged and discharged 500 times before the capacities start to degraded steadily. Since WakaWaka runs at least 2 days on 1 cycle, the batteries will work for at least 1,000 days, or around 3 years before they start to wear out and need to be replaced. On a full battery (less than 1 day charge) WakaWaka provides:
- 8 hours of bright ambient light
- 16 hours of bright reading light
- 80 hours of soft night safety light
WakaWaka currently uses an 18% efficient 0.75W mono crystalline solar cell (industry average is currently 13-15%) with a dimension of 65 cm2. The life expectancy of the cell is well over 10 years.Nickel Metal hydrid (NiMh) batteries are currently the best option in terms of efficiency, environmental impact, temperature resistance and price level. We keep looking for even better alternatives.
The secret to WakaWaka’s extreme efficiency is Intivation’s patented technology. Apart from being long term friends, Intivation provided for the inspiration for WakaWaka back in late 2010. Their Sunboost chip is currently used in around 90% of the all the solar cell phones in the world. WakaWaka is the only handheld solar LED lamp in the world who uses their technology.
With the Sunboost IC, efficiency can be improved to up to 200% especially with low light conditions, so on overcast days or in the rain season. It also allows for WakaWaka to charge sufficiently in other sub optimal conditions, for example when the solar panel is not directed at the sun perfectly. Basically, you can leave your WakaWaka in the sun, regardless of the position, and you’ll have plenty of light in the evening.
Off-Grid Solutions has been consulted by companies such as DSM and innovative minds from WasteWonders about using materials with the smallest possible footprint. These are not necessarily bio degradable materials, it’s important to look at the whole supply chain. The material for WakaWaka needs to enable it to survive in extreme conditions. WakaWaka will be hit with the highest possible amount of UV light and it needs to be resistant against heat, dust and rain. On top of this, we don’t want WakaWaka to crack open when it falls down from ceiling level. The best option until now is recycled ABS with UV filters and anti oxidants.
Certifications WakaWaka is CE and KEMA approved and was designed and is manufactured based on UNFCCC requirements for CDM carbon credits.
